How Gray Was My Valley

May 20, 2007 · No Comments

These days of heavy wet gray skies are a breed of drear from a whole different phylum than the bleak days of winter and early spring. At first it is a novel and wonderful thing to see the newly greened world all wet and wild and busting out with the life that has been dormant for oh so many months. But this stuff gets depressing after a few days. I think it wouldn’t be so bad if it would just stay warm. The rawness of this damp cold really gets to me.

It’s hard to maintain a sunny disposition with the sky all so gray. Besides which I have been learning how much work is involved in the process of buying a house. I’m glad my mother encouraged me to get on the house thing before starting my job. The mortgage application is underway and on Friday the house inspector did his thing. There are a few issues to iron out, and we still need more information regarding the septic system. I think the appraisal will be done this week. Meanwhile, the closing date remains up in the air as no one is quite sure how soon the tenants who now occupy the place will be moved out. June 20th is our set date, but both the current owner and I would like to get it done sooner if we can. We’ll see.

At some point I do need to pack up my apartment. My mom gave me a bunch of boxes that she’s saved, but I still haven’t taken them out of my car. I’ve been so tired, worn out, and weary under the weight of this weather.

Ah, a downpour just took off. Lovely.

When my eyes are on the prize, I am very excited about moving into my house. I love the place, and it will be oh so pretty and cozy and all that. I know it’s a little weird, but one thing that I am looking forward to most is digging out the drainage ditch that runs between the house and the hillside behind it. It’s a bit overgrown now so the water is not draining past the house as well as it should. As soon as I am able I’ll be out there with a shovel and wheelbarrow doing what I can to make the water flow down toward the culvert. New England weather will surely provide me with a lifetime supply of drainage projects to keep me happily playing in the mud.
